To fit new headset cups you need either a proper tool (dead expensive) or a handmade headset, built from bits available from any good DIY store. Unsurprisingly I opted for the latter, cheaper option. Grease the headset cup and inside the head tube using a quality grease (Finish Line is good) and then place the cup in position. Gently tighten the bolts on the headset press and the cup will pop into place Repeat for the other end and bob's your mother's brother.
Fitting a Headset cup Huey's patented headset press together with 'er indoors digital kitchen scales and the ubiquitous Black & Decker workmate sort the headset out and keep it safe to one side so that you know which order it all goes on a willing helper (eldest son and heir) and the headset press in action as you turn the spanner the headset seats itself into the headtube the finished article Chances are that if you are fitting a new headset, you may also have to remove the existing headset from the frame. Step 1 Remove the stem, spacers and tap the top of the fork with a wooden or rubber mallet to release it. Remove the headset upper cup and any bearings that are loose. Place the fork to one side - you may need to remove the disc caliper to separate the fork from the frame. Step 2 Lay the frame on it's side - I use a workbench as support. Make sure you have a cloth beneath the frame to protect it. Use a 'long cylinder of metal' to remove the headset cups. Most sites I have visited use this wording. This troubled me for a long time; where do you get something like this - the metal cylinder shop? It finally struck me that I have an old set of flat bars left over from the long since departed Apollo Terra. I used these and they worked perfectly. Push the bars through the top of the head tube and place it so that it rests againt the top of the headset cup. Tap the end of the bars gently with the mallet four times (North, South East and West) to loosen the headset cup and then a couple of firmer taps should see the cup fly out the end. Do the same for the other headset cup. The flat bars (aluminium coloured) inserted into the head tube to tap the headset cup from the inside. Tap the end of the bars with a wooden mallet (pictured). Use of an expensive Thomas Pink shirt to prevent the frame being scratched is optional! the cups removed - hmm the bearings are pitted and rusty Check out the latest videos we have uploaded
