6th July 2002 - Richard, Paul, David, Keef, Shavey and Gary Evans_Trailbreak

A trip up to experience the delights of a trailbreak. See full report here

9th July

I stripped and rebuilt my front hub last night. Thanks to the instructions at Park_Tools it was easy. I repacked the hub with lots of lovely new grease although the ball bearings on one side were dull and pitted - I must service these more regularly in the future.

14th July – Richard, Billy No Mates Stane_Street

What do you do when no one can make it out? Go out on your own of course. The weather is fantastic today and I leave the house at 9 o’clock to head up to Epsom Downs. I am planning to do the route to Box_Hill but bump into a couple of other guys at Tattenham Corner. Roger and Neil are heading along Stane Street and agree to let me tag along. This is a change to my planned route but what the heck.

Roger on a Gary Fisher heading along Stane Street

We follow each other until the trail splits and I head on exiting Stane Street at the foot of Box_HillI am still trying to decide which route to take next when I bump into 3 more guys whose names I forget and we head up the slow drag to the top of Box Hill. This is a long climb which is much more fun in the opposite direction as the ramblers we pass delight in telling us. I feel a wobble on my front wheel as I climb.

Once at the top I examine the wheel and the cones have worked loose. No one has any tools so I decide to carry on and we head straight back down the fast chalky descent. The others seem impressed by the speed I can maintain on the full suspension of the Enduro as I lead them in by some way – trying not to think too much about what would happen if my front wheel goes.

Again I say goodbye and head back in the reverse direction nursing my front wheel all the way home. A great ride on a great day out in the sun.

21st July - Richard, Paul, David, Elliot Stane_Street

Elliot has made his way over to darkest Surrey this morning. I haven't seen him since trying to chase him up all those climbs at Coed.

We repeat the Stane Street route to Box Hill. The route is a good workout and much more fun this week being much drier than last week.

Elliot has a new bike, having bought a Kona_ManoMano 2001 since March. However he is still climbing like a mountain goat and leaves us standing on all the climbs especially the long drag up Box Hill.

David follows Paul down the side of Box Hill

After a breather at the café we are off again on the more wooded descent. Again, this is a fast and furious ride giving Elliot’s new full-susser a proper workout.

We then take a new return via Headley Heath. After a few map stops and a first sighting of David’s never before used compass we are heading back towards Epsom Downs but not before David manages to take his now customary tumble on some treacherous chalk.

Lastly, we show Elliot the wicked downhill. Almost a mile long, this has everything including narrow channels just wider than your cranks to sweeping chalky runs with large lumps of rock littered about to keep you on your toes and small drop off's to add to the fun. Just before the foot is a permanently boggy area to negotiate.

A great day out, covering 20 miles including the ride up to the start point.

26th July Richard, David, Shavey, Gary and Tom - Reigate to Leith Hill
