6th January 2001 Belmont_Downs - Richard and David This was our first serious outing i.e. actually getting up early when the weather was shitty just to ride around in the mud. We met at 8-45 on a cold Sunday morning. We were only out for an hour and a half but it was pretty enjoyable. We wanted to go out again the following week but David needed to be out by 10 o’clock. No problem, let’s meet at 7-45 am instead! This was the one that confirmed our intentions to go out regularly. Leaving home at 7-30 proved to be leaving home in the pitch black and with snow on the ground and sleet coming down we only managed an hour on the downs. However this set the tone for the rest of the year. If we could do that, we could go out in anything. I was back by 9-30 and as I was undressing from my soggy clothes (no cycling specific clothes at this stage) in my bedroom, my wife woke up and said “Are you going out already?” 28th January Belmont_Downs - David and Richard. Another spin around the Downs but we have heard some rumours about an outbreak of Foot & Mouth. Won’t affect us though we thought...
