January I’ve got a Friday off work so what better thing to do than go out cycling! Can’t believe I’m back on the Apollo but I’ve finally got Adrian to come out again (we last saw him back in August). The weather is freezing but with plenty of kit on we soon warm up.
Richard
on a cold, wet Sunday in January and loving it! We
manage 12 miles around Banstead Downs finishing up with two runs down Track_40.
I get attacked by an Alsatian who runs out of the bushes as we pass and bites
me on the knee and also lose the bite valve on my Decathlon
bladder 5th
January Bought
a new rear mech hanger and inner tube and I refit the LX_rear_mech
and manage to get it working all in one afternoon. I’m very impressed with myself. 6th
January Richard,
David,
Jo, Keith and Paul
- Epsom Downs. An amazing change in the weather in just 2 days. I have much less kit on, even wearing my summer gloves but still work up a good sweat as we take the extended route to Walton Heath and Reigate Hill then along the North_Downs_Way before turning back and coming along the bottom of Box_Hill. The mud is horrendous and in certain places the ground has turned swamp-like qualities. No casualties today, Keith even manages to stay on his bike although he rips the toe clip off one pedal in a viciously narrow gully.

and Jo stuck in the swamp that is Box_Hill (sorry
‘bout the quality – it is misty but there was also lots of dirt flying around
and some got into the lense)

January 2002 Richard and Keith
– Belmont_Downs A
split in the ranks this week. Keith and I go for
a quick spin around Belmont and Track 40. Quite mild still but its been raining
and the mud is really claggy. Keith has been on a spending spree and has bought
SPD’s, Specialized cycling shoes, a new Giro lid, waterproof socks and a bladder
from Decathlon. You never know, he might even consider cleaning his bike next! Jo and Paul are going skiing soon and go for
a longer tour to get in training. They eventually get lost on Leith Hill in the
fog and a 2 hour ride ends up as being a 5 hour epic as they try to trace their
way home | ||

20th January Richard,
David, Paul and
Keith – Epsom_Downs We
do our normal route but in reverse this week. It’s strange how some of the climbs
we normally sweat on feel quite tame when coming down them and vice versa. Reversing
the route has a strange levelling effect. The wind is very strong all morning
and it’s good to get into the shelter of the trees. No injuries this week and
we are finished by 10-30.
