February 2001

Dates are a bit hazy here but we managed one trip around Epsom_Downs before they were closed due to Foot & Mouth.

Keith arrived on the scene and we went out on the road for 3 weeks. We encountered cold stinging February rain but at least I had on my new Altura waterproof, breathable windproof jacket. One of the most effective purchases I have made so far.

On one occasion, we were out for a road run and cut across some rough ground. Suddenly Keith went arse over tit as he took a sharp right turn. He had forgotten he was on his road bike with slicks instead of on his knobblies. This habit of crashing was to revisit Keith many times over the next few years.

I was on the Apollo, which was okay on the road, and I had also bought some Dia_Compe v-brakes from Halfords. They took me a few weeks before I had them working properly but they are a great improvement over the canti’s.
